Agricultural producers face many risks in their economic activity due to weather conditions, plant or animal diseases, price volatility, policy changes and so on. One of the management tools to deal with some of these risks is the crop insurance system. In Catalonia (North-East of Spain) farmers’ participation in crop insurance for vegetables is low. Only 5 percent of the vegetables area is insured, when in Spain, as a whole, this percentage is around 20 percent. Different reasons have been suggested to explain this low participation ratio such as low risk perception, risk diversification, insurance cost or crop damage assessment rules, among others. This guide is aimed at farmers who are considering diversification into horticulture. It assumes a sound and system-based understanding of agricultural systems, but limited knowledge of fruit and vegetable production. Projektet SoilVeg handler om forbedret udnyttelse af jord og ressourcer i økologiske dyrkningssystemer for grøntsager med grønafgrøder. Der afprøves dyrkning af hvidkål i to nye dyrkningssystemer med reduceret jordbearbejdning. I det ene system plantes direkte ned i en tromlet vintergrønafgrøde uden anden jordbearbejdning, og her er det tanken at den tromlede biomasse dækker jorden og dermed holder ukrudt nede i løbet af sæsonen. I det andet system laves stribenedmuldning af grønafgrøden før plantning. De to nye systemer sammenlignes med almindelig nedmuldning og ingen forudgående grønafgrøde. Både vinterhestebønne, vinterært og vintervikke er blevet brugt som grønafgrøder og i blandinger med vinterrug. Disse forsøg kører ved Forskningscenter Årslev i 2016...

Abflammen von Säzwiebeln im Nachauflauf Organic Eprints

Einleitung: Für den ökologischen Anbau von Säzwiebeln ist das Abflammen ein wesentliches Glied in der Kette der Maßnahmen zur Unkrautregulation, ohne das ein großflächiger Anbau nicht denkbar wäre. Anders als bei der Möhre und anderen Arten, bei denen das Abflammen vor Auflauf der Kultur durchzuführen ist, sind bei Zwiebeln auch Behandlungen im Nachauflauf möglich. In der Praxis taucht aber immer wieder die Frage auf, bis zu welchem Entwicklungsstadium das Abflammen erfolgen kann, ohne die Pflanzen nachhaltig zu schädigen. Im Rahmen einer Diplomarbeit (LABER 1990) wurden die Auswirkungen unterschiedlicher Abflammtermine bei Säzwiebeln näher untersucht. Mehrjährige Leguminosen(gras)bestände sind ein wesentliches Fruchtfolgeglied im ökologischen Landbau. Zur N-Fixierungsleistung und den N-Mengen in Aufwuchs und Wurzeln solcher Bestände liegen umfangreiche Literaturdaten vor, dagegen wurde die N-Freisetzung nach Umbruch dieser Bestände in situ bisher kaum untersucht. Ziel der über 3 Vegetationsperioden laufenden Untersuchung war es, die N-Freisetzung aus unterschiedlich bewirtschafteten Klee-, Kleegras- und Luzernebeständen (ein- bzw. 2-jährig, Futternutzung bzw. El estudio de la relación existente entre la diversidad vegetal y la entomofauna constituye un elemento importante para el diseño de agroecosistemas sustentables. Los ambientes semi-naturales en campos cultivados, pueden proveer condiciones adecuadas para la presencia de enemigos naturales, favoreciendo la regulación de plagas y disminuyendo el uso de insumos químicos. There are many gaps for the assessment of seed vigor in vegetable crops, among these the parsley. In this context, the accelerated aging test is recognized as one of the most widely used to evaluate seed physiological potential of various crop species, being able to provide information with a high degree of consistency. Thus, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the methodology of accelerated aging test to check parsley seed vigor, as well as verify the possibility of using NaCl solutions as an alternative to control seed water uptake during the aging period without reducing test sensitivity. O efeito da adubação mineral e orgânica sobre a densidade populacional de Thrips tabaci Lind. em cebola, Allium cepa L., foi avaliado na Estação Experimental de Ituporanga, SC (Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária e Extensão Rural de Santa Catarina), entre agosto e dezembro de 1998. Os tratamentos foram níveis de adubação mineral com N, P2O5 e K2O em dose recomendada e três vezes a recomendada, adubação orgânica e a testemunha foi a ausência de adubação. A Mata Atlântica é um complexo de ecossistemas com elevada diversidade biológica; um dos biomas mais ameaçados do mundo pelas agressões às florestas; uma das cinco regiões do planeta de maior prioridade para a conservação. Em Pindamonhangaba, SP, vem sendo realizado experimentos de conversão agroflorestal de áreas de plantio de Guanandi (Calophyllum braziliense) em várzeas e terraços fluviais. Agronomic and economic evaluation of weed management methods in organic herb and vegetable production systems Organic Eprints

Weed management is reported to be a major constraint in organic agriculture. Organic growers also report a lack of information about non-chemical weed control. A series of field trials was conducted in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and echinacea (Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench) crops to evaluate a range of weed control methods commonly used in organic herb and vegetable production systems. The criteria for evaluating the methods were weed growth, crop yield and cost effectiveness. Hand weeding, tillage and organic mulches (hay and pelletised paper) were effective to very effective at suppressing weeds. Agronomic performance of annual self-reseeding legumes and their self-establishment potential in the Apulia region of Italy. Organic Eprints

The agronomic performance, biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) ability and self-establishment potential of seven species of annual self-reseeding legumes were investigated in Apulia region, Italy. For the first cropping cycle (2005-2006) preliminary results showed that Trifolium spp. performed better than Medicago spp. Among the seven species, five were more suitable to the site’s conditions. T. angustifolium and M. polymorpha gave the best results. T. angustifolium fixed 131.7 kg ha-1 year of nitrogen (15N isotope dilution method), produced 1976 kg ha-1 of seeds and 8.7 t ha-1 of dry matter (DM). Die Winterzeit war traditionell die Zeit des Kohlgemüses, da sich dieses gut lagern lässt und Vitamine und Nährstoffe zur Verfügung stellt. Dieser Trend ist jedoch in den letzten Jahren sowohl im ökologischen wie im konventionellen Anbau rückläufig, während die Nachfrage nach frischem Gemüse stetig zunimmt. Im Winterhalbjahr wird dieses entweder importiert oder in beheizten Gewächshäusern produziert. Die Nachfrage nach frischem vielfältigem und regionalem Gemüse steigt. Der Großteil des Gemüses wird im Winter entweder importiert oder in geheizten Gewächshäusern angebaut und ist durch einen hohen Energieverbrauch charakterisiert. Im Versuchszentrum Gartenbau der Landwirtschaftskammer NRW in Köln Auweiler wurde zur Erweiterung der Angebotspalette eine Salatmischung aus kältetoleranten Arten untersucht. Die Mischung umfasste Asia-Salate (z. B. Blattsenf, Mizuna, Pak-choi), Sauerampfer, Hirschhornwegerich, Endivie und Speisechrysantheme.
